Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas):
* This is the most common sedative used in dentistry. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is inhaled that allows the child to be more relaxed and comfortable. After treatment is completed, the child will breathe 100% oxygen which will push out all the nitrous oxide from the lungs. That way, your child is ready to go home quickly after treatment. A common side effect of laughing gas is nausea and vomiting. If your child is prone to motion sickness, please let Dr. Julie know.
* Also the gas will not put your child "to sleep".
* Nitrous Oxide is not a "miracle" gas that turns a completely uncooperative child into a child able to do dental treatment. If your child is not cooperative, Dr. Julie will discuss other modalities to complete your child's dental treatment safely.
